The Scotiabank Giller Prize is a prestigious honour awarded annually for excellence in Canadian fiction. The Scotiabank Giller Prize was founded in 1994 by Jack Rabinovitch in memory of his late wife, Doris Giller. Jack Rabinovitch himself was once a Labourer-Teacher for United for Literacy, formerly Frontier College and has shown his support for the Giller Light Bash from the very beginning.

The Giller Light Bash combines a taste of the Scotiabank Giller Prize Gala formalities with an affordable price in an exciting party environment. Originally organized as a house party by a group of friends in 2002, the Bash has grown into a full-scale event with over 1,600 people celebrating Canadian literature and supporting literacy from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

We are United for Literacy.

Formerly Frontier College, United for Literacy is the national registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of children, youth, and adults through literacy. With over a century of frontline experience we know just how profoundly literacy changes everything…for people and communities. No other skill shapes the trajectory of a person’s life more than the ability to read and write.

Supported by volunteers, we reach out to people wherever they are and respond to their learning needs. Our services are free for learners because we believe literacy is a human right. For more information about the work we do, visit www.unitedforliteracy.ca.

Organized by
United for Literacy
United for Literacy has been delivering literacy programs to people in communities across Canada since 1899. We started by hosting reading camps equipped with books and volunteers to teach people in remote locations. Today, we offer a variety of programs all over the country. Our founder’s approach was “every place is a learning place,” which established how education and basic literacy was taught throughout Canada. United for Literacy is not bound by the walls of a classroom, only by the dreams of our learners. Our staff and volunteers activate those dreams and help people realize them. Across Canada—in urbanized, rural, and remote locations—we believe any place can be a learning place. We offer free literacy and numeracy programs for children, teens, adults, seniors, and families. Practical and goal-oriented, some programs are in-person, while others reach people online. Our learner-centered programs are tailored appropriately to different ages, life stages, and community priorities. Educators widely regard our programming as best-in-class examples of Student-Centered Individualized Learning principles.
